Luxury Country Holiday Cottages
Ripon, North Yorkshire

Historic country cottages in the heart of North Yorkshire

Historically, Givendale was an important farming community managed and established by the Weddell family, who owned Newby Hall in 1748.

The 18th century cottages overlook the site of a medieval moated manor house, believed to have been home to the Nubie family, who owned the surrounding land, including Newby Hall’s park, in the 13th century.

The period cottages were lovingly renovated and refurbished in 2025, retaining their period charm along with carefully designed interiors and gardens adding a touch of luxury and all the modern comforts. The cottages are filled with character – exposed wood beams, log burners, antiques, cosy, warm interiors blend with luxurious bedding and crisp white sheets, and modern appliances. There are enclosed gardens with furnished terraces overlooking a sensational view – the perfect rural escape!

Frequently asked questions

Have any questions on what to expect? Find our most frequently asked questions below – and if you can’t find what you’re looking for, feel free to message us on WhatsApp.

Can I walk to the house & gardens at Newby Hall?

It takes roughly 25-30 minutes to walk up the carriage drive and through the parkland to the House and Gardens Entrance Pavilion.

Can I walk to the pub from the cottages?

Yes we are spoilt with 2 good pubs within walking distance from Givendale. The Black Lion pub www.theblacklionskelton.com in the village is exceptional! we cant recommend it enough, it is a newly opened, televised, community owned pub, run by dynamic, talented landlord and landlady, Taigh and Mary, who have brought their artistic and gastronomic brilliance from London to rural North Yorkshire. It takes around 30-40 minutes to walk, 15 minutes to cycle through the Newby Hall parkland to the village and pub. The Blackamoor pub is just a 20 minute walk to the end of our lane (taking care when crossing the road at the end) where you will enjoy good pub food and a good Yorkshire pint www.blackamoorinn.com

Where can we find places to visit and dine nearby?

We will email you a copy of our welcome pack prior to your stay, which gives a comprehensive guide to the area (as there is a lot to do and see around us) and our list of recommended places to visit along with our favourite pubs and restaurants nearby.

Can the cottages accommodate an extra person?

We can add a comfortable z-bed in the master bedroom in Chantry Cottage or in the snug with full bedding for an additional charge of £20 per night. Travel cots may be added in either cottage incurring no additional charge.

How do we order a hot tub for our stay?

We only offer hot-tub hire to guests who book both cottages together to avoid disruption to other guests. If you would like to order a hot-tub for your stay, please let Shanie know, who can send you a quote and booking form for either a wood-fired hot-tub or a standard hot-tub which will be supplied by one of our preferred suppliers. The hot tub will be installed (positioned either on one of the garden terraces or in the walled garden) filled, treated and heated ready for your arrival. Please be aware that Givendale Cottages accepts no responsibility for any hot tub related incidents.

Can we check-in earlier or check-out later?

We will always try to accommodate requests wherever possible. If we have guests checking in or checking out on the same day, I am afraid we have no flexibility, however if it has no impact on our cleaning schedule and other guests’ bookings’ we will happily let our guests enjoy the cottages for as long as possible that same day. Please enquire.

What are the rules with dogs in the cottages?

We allow a maximum of 2 dogs per cottage where we apply a pet charge of £20 to cover the extra cleaning. (Depending on the length of stay and type of dogs we may allow 1 more which will incur an additional charge. Please enquire before booking. There is livestock in the surrounding fields and rearing birds, so if your dog can be trusted off the lead and will come back when recalled, they may be off the lead unless there is livestock in that field, where we ask that all dogs be kept on leads.) Dogs must stay in the kitchen or utility room overnight and must not go upstairs or on any of the furniture. There are dog towels in both cottages and an outside hose for muddy paws. Thank you.

Can I order celebratory cakes and decorations for our arrival?

Yes we have an exceptional celebratory cake maker / decorator in the village who you can order a cake through and we will happily put up balloons, banners, chill some champagne ready for your arrival.

What is the damages deposit?

We hold a damages deposit of £150 for 7 days after you leave. This is automatically released back into your account after the 7 day period, unless in the unlikely event serious damage is caused to the property or specialist cleaning required where you will be notified and the incurred cost will be deducted before reimbursement with a receipt for the damage costs.
